Dog Urinary Tract Infection UTI

Well, looks like this is going to be one darn expensive month for vet fees.  Not only will I have to spend about $2,300 on eye surgery for my boy Chester as mentioned in my dog eye surgery post, but it turns out that my girl Roxie has a UTI or urinary tract infection.

Roxie started to show symptoms about two days ago when I noticed that she was going to the dog litter box a bit more frequently.  Then on one occasion, she was in the bathroom with me and peed on the ceramic tile instead of the litter box.  I noticed that there was a bit of blood in the urine spot which is another symptom of UTI.

Frequent Urination And Blood In Urine

Frequent urination and blood are classic symptoms of dog urinary tract infection and just like with humans, females get them more then males since the urethra is closer to their anus although I don’t know if this is the reason why Roxie got an UTI.  It’s probably a bit painful to urinate as well for her.

She did have a UTI when she was still a puppy but fortunately, she has not had another bout until now at six years of age.  So I got a fresh sample of urine by sticking a soup serving spoon underneath her while I asked her to go to the dog litter box.  It was quite easy as the spoon collected an adequate amount of urine which I transferred to a plastic pill container.

I took Roxie to the vet right away with this urine sample and she was started on antibiotics right away.  The vet felt for any stones in her urinary tract but could sense any.  So for now, the antibiotics will be for 14 days, twice per day.

The total vet fee for this was about $200.  This was double the vet cost in Montreal when Roxie had her first UTI.  Looks like Ontario vet fees are higher than those in Quebec.

If your dog has had a UTI, please share the experience as well as the vet cost in the comments section below.
