Example Of The Benefits Of Having Dogs Litterbox Trained

Yesterday was a great example of the benefits of having dogs litterboxed trained rather than traditionally trained to go only outdoors for elimination.  I left my house at mid-afternoon to beat the rush hour traffic (was not entirely successful as traffic was still quite heavy) to get to the opposite side of town to do a motivational talk at a Rotary club.

After my talk, I went to have dinner at a long time friend’s place which was near that part of town.  Since we haven’t seen each other for so long, there was a lot of catching up to do and it was the first time I met his entire family.  So needless to say, I didn’t end up getting home until about 10:30 pm.

My friend was wondering if my dogs were going to make a mess if kept indoors all this time.  I told him that there was nothing to worry about since both of my dogs are completely litterbox trained.  He had never heard of this before and was quite surprised.

When I got home, sure my dogs were a bit hungry but that’s okay.  A late dinner is never too much of a problem for them.  Best of all, they didn’t mess up my house since being litterboxed trained dogs, they simply use the box whenever they need to.

I just went into the dog room and cleaned up whatever was in the litterbox.  Simple and no mess.  That’s an example of the great benefits of training your dog to use a litterbox.  No need to rush home just to let your dog out for elimination.  No need to have your dog hold everything in for hours at a time.

I have a neat video which shows my two dogs using their litterbox.  I am currently working on a project to teach new dog owners how to train their dogs this way.

Wish For A Better Looking Dog Toilet

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

#dog #dogs — As I was browsing through various dog and pet blogs this weekend, I came across some blog posts that showed photos of some really attractive cat litterboxes. Some of these had covers. Some had unique shapes much like the better looking garbage pails. One even had some type of plant arrangement on top of the cover! While I was looking at these, I really do wish for a better looking dog toilet at home.

Right now, maybe because the whole concept of dog litterboxes is still fairly novel, we are still stuck with the same mainly rectangular boxes which pretty well look like oversized traditional cat litterboxes, maybe with a cutaway section in the front for easier entry for the dogs.

Petco came out with a dark blue colour rather than the usual beige that Purina Second Nature uses for their dog litterboxes. Both are of course, well functioned and highly recommended but they are certainly no home decor piece much like some of these cat litterboxes I saw in these blogs.

It looks like people with cat litterboxes can actually put them in all sorts of different places around the home. Not just your usual spare bathroom, laundry room or basement where you hope most of your home visitors won’t see. These cat folks are actually using the better looking cat litterboxes in very prominent places in the house.

Of course, we know that we have been decorating human toilets for years with the fancy lid covers and knick knacks on the top. Why can’t we do this type of thing with a dog toilet?

A dog toilet that is actually presentable as a nice home decor piece. Wouldn’t that be something? I for one, would certainly welcome the idea of a nicer looking dog litterbox although I have a feeling that it will be some time yet before some company comes out with one.

Should You Use Puppy Training Pads?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

#puppies #puppytraining — I noticed that there were quite a lot of puppy training pads at my local Petsmart store.  I personally never used any of these puppy pads but they are certainly cleaner than newspapers when house training puppies.

I think that they can be used in conjunction with dog litterboxes initially in order to help train a puppy to go into the box for elimination.  However, newspapers in the litterbox works just as well.

The puppy training pad are not cheap and they can be costly in the long run if one decides to train dogs inside like I have with my two lhasa apsos.  My two dogs are completely trained to use a dog litterbox indoors although they do go outside sometimes too.  I will have lots of information on training dogs to use litterboxes soon.

I also heard from some dog owners that their dogs have ripped up the puppy training pads for fun which causes a bit of a mess.  But puppies can also do this with newspapers too although newspapers are a lot cheaper!

The puppy training pads are suppose to attract the puppies to them for elimination.  Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t.  I personally think that it’s just as easy to use dog litter and/or newspapers for this purpose.

I’ve trained all my dogs indoors.  My first two dogs were completely trained indoors on newspapers for life and they didn’t have training pads back then.  And when I got my new dogs five years ago, dog litterboxes came out and it was a natural move to use them.

So overall, I think puppy training pads are a good idea if you want to use something less potentially messy than newspapers since papers can mark up ceramic floors due to the print ink.  However, the puppy pads can be bypassed much like I did with my dogs.  You can easily use a combination of newspapers and dog litter at first while gradually training your puppy to use just the dog litter eventually.  This is the route I took and advocate.

Push Purina To Sell Second Nature Dog Litter In Canada

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

#dog #dogs — I was in the US for a business trip speaking at a college in upstate New York this week and since it was a road trip, I took advantage of being there to stop by Petco and Petsmart to stock up on Purina Second Nature dog litter (see my review about this product).

The package has both English and French text on it so it was definitely originally intended to sell in both Canada and the US.  The fact that Second Nature is still not available in Canada is absolutely ridiculous, especially given that the product is made in New Brunswick.

So many dog owners up here in Canada could use Second Nature especially with our cold winters which doesn’t make it feasible all the time to bring our dogs outside.  Their similar product, Yesterday’s News, is good but because the pellets are so small, there is a lot of tracking.  This is why the larger pellets of Second Nature would be much better for the dog litterbox.

If you are a Canadian dog owner, especially of a smaller breed who can benefit from indoor litterbox training, get your local pet store to push the Purina people to come to their senses and make Second Nature available in Canada.
